- Vojtko crossover networks
MartinLogan’s truth in sound philosophy is the cornerstone of the company’s success, a truth that is achieved by pushing forward electrostatic and thin-film technologies. The MartinLogan Motion 60XTi combines some of the company’s proprietary technology to an elegant design in order to create a powerful yet very detailed and responsive loudspeaker. It profits from Folded Motion XT Tweeters, aluminum cones and the exclusive Vojtko crossover networks, a proprietary design named after MartinLogan’s chief audio technologist.
Benefiting from the company’s deep knowledge and understanding of electrostatic and thin-film technology, the Motion 60XTi is equipped with a Folded Motion XT tweeter. This component is a thin-film transducer design, packing the lightweight film in an accordion like structure to considerably increase surface area (eight to ten times that of a typical tweeter). This design allows the tweeter to produce an extended bandwidth with a higher level of accuracy and faster transient response. It also allows for more output capacity while producing virtually no distortion. In this way, the Folded Motion XT tweeter approaches the performance of an electrostatic panel.
The midrange and the woofers on the Motion 60XTi all use a rigid aluminum cone and concave dust cap for added strength. This design combines the lightness and rigidity of the aluminum to high power magnets in order to deliver massive excursion and sound output. Furthermore, the aluminum’s damping property ensures the non-resonant response of the cone while the metal’s thermal conductivity makes it serve as efficient heat sink for the voice coils.
To ensure the same level of accuracy in the midrange as in the higher frequencies, the surround and the spider have been stiffened. This changes the component’s resonant frequency and optimizes its performance in the range that is natural for mid-frequency reproduction. In the same objective of optimizing accuracy, the woofers on the Motion 60XTi are mounted low on the cabinet. This is to address the phenomenon know as “floor bounce” where sounds aimed at the listener experience interference from the sounds that ricochet from the floor. This low-mounting design supresses the bloated bass and massive increases and decreases in sound levels throughout critical midrange frequencies that the listener would experience.
MartinLogan's chief audio technologist Joe Vojtko has a unique approach to crossover design and it is the reason they are named after him. This component is not so much a set of design requirements as it is a philosophy. Vojtko crossovers are designed in such a way that all drivers are kept within their optimal frequency range and balanced with one another. They are built from high-quality parts, and care is taken to avoid overly complex topologies, a simple objective due to the careful way the woofers and tweeters are selected. The most important factor in the design of a Vojtko crossover is that the final voicing is conducted in a environment that represents real-world usage, making it specifically tuned for real-world usage.
