Introducing Utopia, Elear, Listen: Three new Focal headsets

Focal's new Listen, Elear and Utopia models raise the bar a notch in the domain of high-end headphones, for portable as well as sedentary listening.

Focal, the famous manufacturer of audio equipment, is renowned for its high-qualituy loudspeakers, but also for its headsets that are intended for home use or while on the move. The French company just launched three new models of headphones – named Listen, Elear and Utopia – that will catch your attention for sure.

Listen Closed-Back Portable Headphones: Musicality On The Go

The Focal Listen headphones are for audiophiles who want to listen to music from a smartphone, a portable digital player or a laptop when on the go or traveling. The advantages related to portability are not obtained to the detriment of the quality of sound reproduction, since these headphones reproduce well-sensed bass sounds, offer a significant tonal balance and emit sound with greater dynamics.

The Focal Listen headset has an impedance of 32 ohms, which allows its use with any mobile device without the need for an external amplifier. The closed shells of these headphones offer a high level of insulation from environmental noise, in tandem with broad earpads made of 22 mm-thick memory foam. The headphones are distinguished by their comfort and the shape of the headband that allows an optimum positioning on the head. The shells are collapsible, which facilitates the storage and transport when not in use.

The Listen headphones have transducers whose dynamic capsule measuring 40 mm in diameter use a membrane made of polyethylene terephthalate (Mylar) as well as a titanium coating over the dome. Mylar gives an ideal compliance to the suspension of the driver, whereas titanium increases the stiffness of the transducer dome. This headset provides a frequency response that extends from 15 Hz to 22 kHz, a 122 dB SPL sensitivity at 1kHz and harmonic distortion of less than 0.4% at 1kHz and 100 dB SPL.

Finally, the Focal Listen headphones have a flat cable with a 3.5-mm plug, whose length of 1.4 m is quite suitable for use when on the move. Thus, it is not necessary to tie a knot or make a ball with the cable when moving as it is the case with other headsets that are available in the marketplace. In addition, the cable has a remote control and an omnidirectional microphone for phone calls.

Elear Open-Back Headphones: Amazing Performance

The high-fidelity Elear headphones, made in France, stands apart with their leather-covered headband that incorporates the adjustment mechanisms for length and rotation of the earpieces, their massive aluminum yokes with a brushed finish and their comfortable, 20-mm thick memory foam pads that are covered with microfibre fabric.

But it’s the use of broadband transducers, which are fully uncovered behind the earpieces - allowing a full decompression of the speakers while performing - that will make this headset the talk of the town. For the Elear headphones, Focal uses transducers measuring 40 mm in diameter whose domes, bearing an M-shaped membrane, are made of an alloy of aluminum and magnesium. This feature greatly contributes to obtaining surprising dynamics and a high level of realism in sound reproduction, with a frequency response extending from 5 Hz to 23 kHz.

The Elear headphones offer a sensitivity of 104 dB SPL at 1 kHz and total harmonic distortion less than 0.3% at 1 kHz and 100 dB SPL. Its detachable, flat, shielded 4-meter long cable, with a 3.5-mm plug, is connected to the headset through two connectors with locking mechanisms.

Utopia open-back headphones : The Sonic Summit

The Utopia headphones, the very best among Focal’s headsets offer, are of "reference" caliber.

Made in France, these headphones have several features in common with the Elear model, like the impedance of 80 Ohms, the leather-covered headband that incorporates the adjustment mechanisms, the brushed-aluminum yokes, the 20-mm thick memory foam pads and the shielded, flat 4-meter cable. Also, the Utopia model has broadband transducers measuring 40 mm in diameter – using domes bearing an M-shaped membrane – which are fully uncovered behind the earpieces.

However, the Utopia headphones offer a greater sound experience thanks to transducers whose domes are made of beryllium, a technology for which Focal applied for a patent. In addition to a frequency response extending from 5Hz to 50kHz, this headset offers a sensitivity of 104 decibels of sound pressure level at 1kHz and total harmonic distortion lower than 0.2% at 1kHz and 100 dB SPL. Thus, the Utopia headphones reproduce sound with realism, transparency and dynamism that appeal to the most-demanding music lovers.

Besides shielded Lemo connectors with locking mechanisms on the earpieces and a 6.5-mm Neutrik plug, the Utopia headset is characterized by its earpiece covers made of microfiber fabric and genuine lambskin.
